    FIRE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

    Title: Evening Tower Tour

    Date/Time: Sunday, December 3, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

    Location: Fire Island Lighthouse

    Fee Information:  $20 non-members, $15 for FILPS members; reservations required.

    Abstract:  See the sunset and the rise of the Snow Moon from the top of the Fire Island Lighthouse.

    Event Description: Experience the sunset and the rise of the Snow Moon rise from the top of the Lighthouse tower. Bring a flashlight for your walk back to the parking field. Sunset is at 4:26 pm.  Reservations required. For reservations and information call the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society at 631-661-4876.

     

    Title: Lighthouse Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour

    Dates/Times: Saturday, December 9, 9 am – 11:30 am

    Location: Fire Island Lighthouse

    Fee Information: $20 non-members, $15 for FILPS members; reservations required.

    Abstract: Follow a Lighthouse Keeper on his rounds on this bottom to top tour of the Fire Island Lighthouse. Learn how the lighthouse keepers past and present maintain the light.

    Event Description: This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and Light Keeper’s workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. This program includes a tour of the Lens Building which houses the historic first order Fresnel lens. Reservations required. Space is limited.     Title: 15th Reenactment of the Flying Santa

    Date/Time: Saturday, December 9, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

    Location: Fire Island Lighthouse

    Fee Information: Free

    Abstract: Relive this historic event. Santa arrives at the Lighthouse.  Great photo opportunity!

    Event Description: Back in 1953 Pilot Snow (a.k.a. “Flying Santa”) flew his plane past the Fire Island Lighthouse and left package of holiday gifts for the Lighthouse Keeper and his family. Relieve this historic event and expect a special guest in a red suite. Arrive early and bring your camera.     Title: New Year’s Day Hike

    Date/Time: Monday, January 1, 10 am – 11 am

    Location: Meet at Robert Moses State Park, Field #5

    Fee Information: Free; reservations required.

    Abstract: Meet at Robert Moses State Park, Field #5 for a guided walk on New Year’s Day.

    Event Description: Join the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society for a walk around the Seashore’s western end on the first day of the New Year. Afterwards, climb the lighthouse tower at the regular fee.  Reservations required. For reservations and information call the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society at 631-661-4876.

     

    WILDERNESS VISITOR CENTER

    Title: Late Fall Birding on the Barrier Beach

    Date/Time: Sunday, December 3, 9 am – noon

    Location: Wilderness Visitor Center

    Fee Information: Free

    Abstract: It’s not winter officially yet, but the winter birds have arrived! Come birding on Fire Island with a park ranger.

    Event Description: Wintering waterfowl are here for the season, and northern sparrows are hiding in the beach grass. A variety of gulls are all about the beach, and an occasional hawk or two might zoom by. Join a park ranger for this bird walk along the barrier beach at this late autumn time of year. 3-miles round trip.     Date/Time: Friday, December 15, 7 pm – 9 pm

    Location: Wilderness Visitor Center

    Abstract: View the stars and constellations in the dark skies above the Fire Island Wilderness. Event Description: Join Astronomer Tom Carey for this program about the stars and constellation in the skies above Fire Island. After an indoor presentation, head out into the night for star viewing. Dress warmly. Reservations required.     Location: Wilderness Visitor Center

    Date/Time: Sunday, December 17, 1 pm – 2:30 pm

    Abstract: Bring the family and celebrate the chilly season on Fire Island.

    Event Description: With the solstice just around the corner, it’s time to welcome winter. Join this family friendly program to explore signs of winter on Fire Island and make an ornament celebrating the chilly season. Hot chocolate for all!  Dress warmly and for the outdoors.
