    Flying Dutchmen 2017 Suffolk County Champions

    The West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen drill team added another victory on Saturday July 8th, by winning for the 33rd time in the team’s history, the annual Suffolk County Volunteer Fireman’s Association’s firematic competition hosted by the Selden Fire Department at the Brookhaven Town Fireman’s Memorial Park in Ridge.

    The Flying Dutchmen competed against 14 teams from throughout Suffolk County, and compiled 27 points overall by placing in seven of the eight contests on the day.

    Rounding out the top-five overall were the Lindenhurst Snails in second with 21 points, the Central Islip Hoboes in third with 19 points, the North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers in fourth with 17 points, and the Bay Shore Redskins in fifth with 10 points.

    The Dutchmen compiled their points by placing second in Three Man Ladder (6.57 seconds), second in Motor Hook and Ladder Class B (6.55 seconds), second in Motor Hose Class C (12.61 seconds), second in Motor Hose Class B (7.95 seconds), second in Efficiency (9.15 seconds), first in Motor Pump (5.70 seconds) and fourth in Buckets (23.77 seconds).

    The 2017 Suffolk County championship title was the team’s 177th win since the team began competing in 1892, less than a year after the department was founded.

    The Flying Dutchmen are coached by Frank R. Miller Sr., G. Scott Schrader and Robert Marra, led by Captain Michael Marra and Lieutenants Frank R. Miller Jr.  and Daniel Tenney, and comprised of David Banks, Kevin Candido, Louis Christensen, Diana Fuller, Patrick Garrett, Kristy Hothan, William Hothan, Ryan Huguenin, Casey Johnson, Robert Noonan, Richard Quenzer, Joseph Quenzer, Douglas Quenzer, Gary A. Schaum, and Ryan Tenney.
