Handicapped Equipment Improves Access to Sayville Beach

Islip Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently visited Foster Avenue Beach in Sayville, to celebrate the addition of new equipment that will aid handicapped access to the beach.

The Town recently installed two Mobi Mats – specialized sheets of plastic material that allow wheelchairs to traverse sandy terrain. The Town also added a beach-specific wheelchair to the facility, which can both improve access for disabled individuals and help lifeguards respond to emergencies involving beachgoers with limited mobility.

“These upgrades will vastly improve the experience for disabled or handicapped individuals at the beach,” said Councilwoman Mullen. “In addition, these upgrades represent a commitment to ensuring the safety of all beach patrons at this location, which is one of our busiest in the summer.”
