Volunteers Celebrate Earth Day with the Great American Cleanup

Keep Islip  Clean, which envisions all 18 hamlets of Islip as clean, green and beautiful, encourages volunteers to celebrate Earth Day with a litter cleanup, beautification effort, recycling activity or any community enhancing project.

In addition to honoring Earth Day, which takes place every year on April 22nd, these springtime events contribute to the Great American Cleanup, a national initiative from Keep America Beautiful. Entering its 19th year, the Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program with events occurring each spring in more than 20,000 communities across the country.

KIC, along with other organizations in Keep America Beautiful’s national network of community-based affiliates, plans volunteer events and education programs that help to remove litter, clean beaches and waterways, plant flowers and improve recycling.

“It’s inspiring to see several thousand KIC volunteers  throughout Islip turn out each year to participate in the numerous Earth Day events that comprise our contribution to the Great American Cleanup,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC. “Whether a volunteer wants to join an event or create their own, we’ll help make all volunteers transform public spaces into beautiful places.”

KIC supports all participants with guidance and supplies, including trash bags, volunteer vests and gloves to make each project a success. Educational activities are also available for grade school children.

National sponsors of the 2017 Great American Cleanup include Altria, BNSF Railway, Dow, The Glad Products Company, Lowe’s, Niagara Bottling and ReadyRefresh by Nestle. Local sponsors of KIC’s events include The Nature’s Bounty Co., Hunt Enterprises McDonald’s, White Flower Farms andW. Atlee Burpee Company.
