    Title of Event:  A Spring Thing

    Event Abstract:   Spy the early signs of spring in the varied habitats of the historic William Floyd Estate.

    Description:   

    Signs of spring are beginning to show all around us. How many “spring things” can we find on our walk?  Search for early wildflowers, swelling tree buds, new scents in the air, and early migrating birds. Roundtrip walk approximately 2 miles.

    Event Abstract:  A 3-mile birding walk in search of spring migrants and year-round residents.

    Event Description: Search for spring migrants and year-round birds in the fields and forests of the William Floyd Estate during this 3-mile walk with a park ranger. Bring binoculars if you have them.

    Event Abstract:  Celebrate the earth by walking through its fields, forests and wetlands at the William Floyd Estate.

    Event Description: Celebrate the earth by visiting the varied habitats of the William Floyd Estate. Walk through fields and forests to the vast salt marshes of the Great South Bay, and discover different plants and animals along the way. Roundtrip walk is 3 miles.

    Event Abstract:  Celebrate Arbor Day at the William Floyd Estate. It’s all about the trees!

    Event Description: How can you tell an oak tree, from a hickory, or a walnut? What distinguishes a cedar, from a pine, from a spruce? It’s Arbor Day— the perfect day to spend time with the majestic trees of the William Floyd Estate. Learn to identify them by their shape, bark and buds.

    Event Abstract:  It’s International Dark Sky Week and a perfect time for children ages 8 and up to explore the stars and constellations.

    Event Description:  Kick off International Dark Sky week at the Fire Island Lighthouse. Discover the stars and constellations above Fire Island and the value of dark night skies in nature.  Children ages 8 and up and their care givers are welcome. Park at Robert Moses State Park, Field #5 and follow the boardwalk east to meet the park rangers at that the Lighthouse. Dress for the outdoors and bring a flashlight.  Reservations Required.

    Abstract:  It’s all about trees today…and the bees, butterflies and people that depend on them. Join the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society for this Arbor Day Celebration.

    Description:   Celebrate Arbor Day and explore the virtues of trees and other native plants. Bees need them, butterflies need them, birds need them, squirrels need them…and so do people.  Create a butterfly craft and take some native plant seedling home for your pollinator garden.

    Title of Event: Pick It Up!

    Event Abstract:  Roll up your sleeves and chip in to help clear Fire Island’s shore of marine debris.

    Event Description:  Join The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and Fire Island National Seashore for this volunteer coastal cleanup –part of the Pick It Up  initiative to eradicate debris from New York’s Beaches. Learn about the sources of marine debris and the impact it has on marine life; document the trash collected to help inform ocean policy and ensure the future health of the marine ecosystem.  Bring work gloves if possible.

    Event Description:  Celebrate Junior Ranger Day at Fire Island National Seashore. Join a park ranger for this exploration of the barrier beach. Discover seashells by the shore, shorebirds on the beach, and gemstones in the sand.  For Junior Rangers (aka kids) ages 8-12 and their families.
