Parade of Thankfulness – Honoring Veterans at Thanksgiving

Sayville Academic Center staff and students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES invited local veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines to participate in an in-school parade.

“Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to show veterans how much we are thankful for their service and to honor them,” said Principal Sue Peterson.

Students and staff lined the hallways, dressed in red, white, and blue. They waved flags, wore patriotic hats, and cheered as the veterans paraded past them.

Everyone gathered in the gymnasium to participate in a short assembly that included the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem. Students gave the veterans handmade thank you cards and read them stories about why they are thankful. The veterans were invited back to the classrooms so the students could ask the veterans questions in a quiet and personal setting.

The veterans were humbled by the outpouring of thankfulness and appreciated the student’s interest in hearing their personal stories about joining the military, serving the United States of America, and the challenges they face after returning home from war.
