Sayville VFW Post 433 Hosts BBQ for Hospitalized Veterans

Saturday August 13th was a terribly hot day in Sayville, but it didn’t deter the members of VFW Post 433 from hosting their annual Bar B Que for hospitalized veterans.

Thanks to the commitment of the membership and their supporters, the event went on as planned.

Fortunately, the hall where the guests were treated was air conditioned, so their safety was assured, but we would be remiss if we didn’t give a resounding shout out to the cooks, VFW members George McEwen and John Skidmore, who spent the day outside cooking.

Once again the BBQ was a huge success, it seems like every year it just gets better and better.

Close to 40 veterans and staff members from the State Veterans Home at Stony Brook, Northport VA Medical Center and the Arbors Assisted Living Residence in Bohemia arrived at the VFW Post on Lakeland Avenue and were greeted by Post members and volunteers, as well the 42nd Infantry Division Army Band. Post Commander Joe White welcomed everyone to the Post, and following the Pledge of Allegiance and Benediction offered by Post Chaplin Ron Bergmann, State Senator and Post 433 member Tom Croci gave a special thank you to all the veterans in the hall, emphasizing how their service and sacrifice have secured the safety of our country and set an example for the young men and women of his generation to follow in their footsteps.

The Army Band surprised all of us this year as the entire band showed up, not just an ensemble. 40 members strong, the band entertained everyone with a musical selection that covered everything from military marches, to popular favorites.  They ended their performance by playing the Armed Services Medley, featuring the songs of each service branch.  The veterans in the audience, ranging from WWII veterans to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, proudly saluted when their branch’s song was played. They concluded their performance by presenting the Post with a Commendation for their commitment to serving veterans. By the end of the performance, there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

After a short intermission the entertainment continued with a display of dancing by the Sayville Line Dancers, always a highlight of the BBQ.  Everyone who wanted to was allowed to join in the dancing and the veterans loved it.

The veterans were served their meals by a mix of Post 433 members and their families as well as representatives of the St Joseph the Worker Catholic Church Youth Group in Patchogue, coordinated by Angela Ucci (wife of Post member Phil), The Sayville Line Dancers and members and children of the Sayville Mom’s Group.

The Party ended with the presentation of a VFW Post 433 hat and sweatpants to each veteran.

It was a wonderful day and maintained its place as Post 433’s favorite event of the year, giving the whole community an opportunity to thank these veterans for all they have done for us as a nation.
