Garbarino Responds to Signing of Veterans Pension Buyback Bill

Assemblyman Garbarino (R,C,I-Sayville) was excited to announce that the Veterans Pension Buyback bill was finally signed into law this week.

The new law allows honorably discharged service members with five years of existing public pension credit to purchase three years of credit with their military service. Previously, state law allowed veterans who served in only certain conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, to purchase pension credits. The new law strikes out the specific conflicts to expand eligibility to all honorably-discharged veterans who work in the public sector.

“This bill is long overdue, as the governor vetoed the legislation twice. I am happy he finally came to his senses and signed this bill” said Garbarino. “For over two years we worked with veterans groups to draft, introduce, and revise this legislation. The overwhelming support from veterans and civilians alike helped ensure the success of this bill, which will help veterans achieve the financial security they deserve.

“While the Veterans Pension Buyback is a step in the right direction, we still have a long way to go to properly repay our veterans. They have shouldered the burden of protecting our families and ensuring our freedom.” said Garbarino. “I will do what I can to make sure eligible veterans are made aware of this new opportunity.”
