February is a month with a number of animal related celebrations and events going on. Here are just a few:
Westminster Dog Show
The 140th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show took place in NYC at Madison Square Garden . The Westminster show dates back to 1877. Since it’s inception, over 300,000 dogs have been entered. More than 3000 dogs, representing more than 185 breeds, are featured in the venerable show, which, after the Kentucky Derby, is the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the U.S. Owners travel from around the world to participate in what many consider to be America’s most prestigious dog show. The breeds are grouped as follows: Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding ,Sporting, Working, and Terrier. Each dog is judged not against the other breeds of dogs in the show, but against its own breed standard.
This years winner was CJ, a German Shorthaired Pointer who took top honors on February 16.
National Bird Feeding Month and the GBBC
February is National Bird Feeding Month, and the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) took place February 12- 15 .This program allows everyone to participate in a citizen- science project jointly run by the the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. For more information, check out www.birdsource.org.
Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shops is a major sponsor of the GBBC. Visit their Oakdale location (911 Montauk Hwy) to learn more about feeding birds in our area.
International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day-February 23
The first dog biscuits were developed in the mid-19th century by American manufacturer James Spratt. He came up with the idea after he visited Liverpool in England, where he observed stray dogs hungrily tucking into ship’s biscuits. The first Spratt’s biscuits were produced in London, with a secret recipe including both meat and vegetables.
