Addressing Sayville Parking Concerns at Sayville Plaza Shopping Center

In response to patron and business owner’ frustration caused by the recent towing of cars from the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center parking lot, the Sayville Chamber of Commerce has begun working with Islip Town Council woman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt to alleviate some of the tensions.  In the past few weeks an estimated 25 to 30 car have been towed from the parking lot located on the Northeast corner of Main Street and Railroad Avenue in Sayville.  The lot is privately owned and signs are placed throughout the area indicating parking is limited to patrons of the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center and only during “time while shopping at Sayville Plaza”.

To deter patrons of other businesses in Sayville from parking in the lot and risk being towed, efforts are currently underway to increase signage indicating that the parking lot adjacent to the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center known as Jerry Brown parking lot offers free parking for all Sayville patrons and businesses and is available for use at all times.  The Jerry Brown lot is directly East of the Plaza parking lot and is accessible via Montauk Highway and through the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center lot.

“While we certainly respect the owner of the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center’s right to manage parking on private property, we want to ensure that residents and visitors can safely park in Sayville to patronize all of our business and enjoy the town, “ said John Cox, President of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce.  ”We are grateful for the swift actions made by Trish Bergin Weichbrodt’s office and the Town of Islip Parking to promote an alternative parking solution that is still convenient.”

The Chamber hopes that the increased signage will encourage visitors and patrons to avoid parking in the Sayville Plaza Shopping Center lot when not patronizing the specific businesses located in the Plaza and thus avoid being towed.  Over the coming weeks, the Chamber will also be working with Islip Town Parking to assess the success of the placement of the signs and make necessary adjustments.
