On June 7th, a record 565 runners plus an additional 100 walkers completed the tenth annual Keith Nintzel Memorial 5k.  The 5k race, which started on Candee Ave. and finished at the Common Ground, raises funds for the Keith R. Nintzel Memorial Scholarship, an award given to graduating Sayville High School seniors to help them with the costs of higher education.

Conor Shelley from Rockville Centre blitzed the men’s course in 15:35, an average of 5:02 minutes per mile, defeating a men’s field that was among the deepest on Long Island so far this year.  Local runner Katie McGrath won the women’s race in a time of 18:41.

Race director Ryan Soltan credits the weather for the fast times and large turnout, “The weather was perfect today and I think a lot of people wait to what it will be like before they register.  For the competitive runners it helped that it wasn’t too humid.”

Former Sayville Cross Country coach Glen Drago was on hand to watch as many of his former runners from over 25 years of coaching were participating in the run.  “I saw some of the pictures of Keith and I remember them like they were yesterday.  Those were fun times.  It’s great to see so many Sayville Cross Country alumni out here supporting Keith’s race” said Drago.

Runners who stayed after they finished were treated to post race refreshments, an award ceremony, and raffles, which included donations from local businesses.  Judging from crowd reaction, the highlight of the raffle might have been a beach cruiser bike donated by Anheuser-Busch.

The race was the first in the Sayville Summer Series, an annual event sponsored by the Sayville Running Company and Long Island Sports and Rehabilitation Center.  Remaining races include the Community Ambulance 5k, the Race to Cure Cystic Fibrosis, and the Summerfest Hon.  John P. Cohalan 4 mile run.  Information on the remaining runs can be found at SayvilleSummerSeries.com
